Kenyan StrikeBREAKING NEWS!

On May 18, an ICSP scholar, was among the thousands of University of Nairobi students ordered to vacate her dorm within 30 minutes due to eruptions of violence around campus.

The violence, called  a ”strike” by students and the media, was sparked after student elections. Online, students claim that university administrators created irregularities to try to usher in their preferred candidates.  While university administrators are calling for peaceful dialogue, Faith and Dominic, our students on the ground there, report massive destruction of university property.  The media reports that passing cars have been stoned and nearby businesses have been vandalized.  University officials disbanded the student government, which prompted Kenyan governmental officials to intervene.  While the official word is that the University of Nairobi will be closed “indefinitely,” the word on the street right now is that studies are likely to resume in two weeks.  IPI Founder, Dr. Karambu Ringera, is on faculty at the University, and two of our students (Faith Kathambi and Dominic Muriuki) study there. Meanwhile, both Dominic and Faith have reported in and are ok.  Karambu is in the States.
